Match Report
Starting day two with only 2 points from a possible 6, Sydney's match up against last years beaten finalist Parkes was a daunting prospect.
Statistically, the match was very even and this was also reflected in the possession and territory stats. Parkes opened the scoring in the 10th minute from a Mathew Searl penalty corner. James Fordham effected a very fine deflection to bring the scores even.
The match ebbed and flowed until the 34th minute when Glen Castensen was handed a 10 minute Yellow Card for an ill timed tackle that bought down Parkes player Laurie Wakefield. Sydney wishes Darbs all the best in his recovery from this clash. Paul Baxter converted the resulting penalty stroke to hand Parkes the advantage again. One minute later, Paul Barrett joined Glen in the bin with a green card, but Sydney was unable to score during his period of suspension.
At this point, the match was complicated by a 7 minute "pause" owing to the need to get an ambulance on the pitch to medivac a player from the previous match. It was incredibly frustrating for both players and managers, but as always, player safety takes precedence and we wish the injured Illawarra player a speedy recovery.
Evan Watson fired home a penalty stroke for Sydney to bring things level in the 47th minute.
The final minute saw frantic action at both ends of the field. The match ended with a penalty corner to Parkes which Sydney defended, only to have a second corner awarded. Matthew Searl was able to slam home the winner after the final buzzer to hand Parkes the win and severally disrupt Sydney's hopes to defend their title.
Sydney were always chasing the game, and at full-time found themselves on the wrong side of a 3-2 score line.
