Can Australia defend the Olympic Mens Hockey title?

0 of 5 - 0 votes

For many years, winning the mens Olympic Hockey title proved an illusive dream for the Australian team.  Starting in 1964, Australia managed to secure 3 Silver and 3 Bronze medals.  Finally, at Athens in 2004, Australia defeated the Netherlands to add Gold to their collection.

Since Hockey was first played at the Olympics in 1908, only 3 teams have been able to successfully defend the title.  Great Britain (1908 & 1920), India (6 consecutive wins - 1928 - 1956) and the Netherlands (1996 & 2000).

As a Kiwi, my allegances lie elsewhere, but Australia must go into the tournament a strong favourite to add to the list of countries who have successfully defended the Gold medal.

I look forward to watching the games as the Olympic Hockey tournament progress's in August 2008.
